Is There A Need To Go Through A Police Academy?

January 28th, 2010

Already sure of becoming a police officer? Ready for the possible consequences of fighting against the bad guys and as a part of the job, sacrificing your own life to save innocent people?

Well first off, you need to know a little bit more about becoming a police officer and police officer training in an academy. Is there really a need to undergo such training? Well, YES of course!

So to give you an overview, I’ve clipped out some important details from this source here – and thought of sharing it to you for reference.

Here’s the summary -

What is a Police Academy?

It’s not just a movie franchise – police academies are run by most major police departments to train their new recruits in the skills they’ll need.

What are the Requirements for Entry to Police Academy?

* Good physical fitness
* Age of at least 18 or 21
* High school diploma or GED
* No felony convictions

What Happens at Police Academy?

Cadets at a police academy are trained in a variety of important skills necessary for work as a police officer. The instruction includes a mix of classroom and hands-on training, and lasts for several months. Academy education is generally a full-time job, although some colleges and independent organizations allow for evening class work, which can be scheduled around other employment responsibilities.

That is just to give you an outlook of what to expect and what will happen when you train in a police academy.

Hope this helps. If you have additional knowledge, feel free to share your opinion below. I’ll be very glad to respond to them all. ;-)

How Does One Become A Police Officer?

January 7th, 2010

Being a police is a tough job. Some consider it to be a very challenging opportunity, yet some look at it as a dangerous path to pursue.

As we all know, police officers have this greatest responsibility in maintaining law, peace, and order in communities. They do this by watching out for those bad individuals, catching them, and then putting them into jail. That sounds exciting for some, but dangerous for others.

Well, those who choose to become a policeman has had their what we call, “calling” when they are still younger. These people really aimed to become an officer when they were still kids. However, there are also who came to realizations of becoming a policeman in the later part of their lives. Yet either way, it is not that easy to become part of this duly respected citizens. One must undergo trainings and proper education first before qualifying to becoming a police officer.

Let me quote this from a source that I’ve found

* Graduating from High School: Nearly all departments require Police Officer candidates to be high school graduates. Some police departments hire graduates directly out of high school as clerks or cadets, but these trainees usually must wait until the age of 20 to become fully designated as Police Officers.

* Completing College-Level Training: Many postsecondary institutions offer associate or bachelor’s degree programs in law enforcement, criminal justice or related fields, helping future Police Officers gain theoretical knowledge to complement their practical training. Although not every department requires it, aspiring Police Officers usually have better chances for career advancement if they have finished some college-level courses or have attained a college degree.

* Attending a Police Academy: Police Officers must complete a period of professional training in subjects such as community patrolling, ethics, firearms, arrest protocols and first aid before they can begin law enforcement work. The majority of large police departments maintain their own police academies, but Police Officers in smaller departments often train at regional academies that are shared between several jurisdictions.

So there you go. If you want to become a police officer, you should at least qualify and trudge on those 3 steps. ;-)

Are you ready? :D

Sure you are!
